Leanne Male, Assistant Director of Research at Asthma UK says: 'This research supports a small number of previous studies which have suggested that taking aspirin could help protect against developing adult-onset asthma.

'The research in this area is contradictory however, as while more recent evidence does show that taking aspirin can trigger the production of compounds which can reduce inflammation, such as that which occurs in the airways of asthma sufferers, there is also a wealth of research indicating that taking aspirin can actually worsen asthma symptoms.

'We would advise that people with asthma should avoid using aspirin, unless they know they can take it safely, as there is a risk of potentially serious sensitivity reactions. If you are concerned about how taking aspirin could affect your asthma you should consult your doctor or call the Asthma UK Adviceline on 08457 01 02 03 and talk to one of our asthma nurse specialists.'
