UroToday.com - Jill Dubbes, OT, Alain Bourcier MD, and Jerry Blaivas MD provided an informational overview of the role of conservative measures in the treatment of urinary incontinence. Conservative measures, including behavioral changes and dietary modification, voiding pattern recognition, pelvic floor exercises were reviewed.

Keeping in mind that conservative therapy requires a motivated and compliant patient, and in terms of pelvic floor muscle exercises and biofeedback, an effective therapist, prognostic factors for success were defined by the panelists. For stress incontinence, prognostic factors for success include baseline higher urinary volume loss, higher leak point pressure, greater urethral mobility, and better pelvic floor function. For urge incontinence, bladder compliance and outlet obstruction predict outcomes. Additionally, Dr. Blaivas discussed an overactive bladder classification system that may eventually prove to predict outcomes of conservative and other treatment options.
