Public Protection And Independence Key To Future Healthcare Regulation, UK
Main Category: Public HealthArticle Date: 27 Mar 2008 - 3:00 PDT
All healthcare regulators should continue to emphasise the public protection focus of their work, says the GDC in its response to the Department of Health's consultation on the Health Care and Associated Professions (Miscellaneous Amendments) No 2 Order.
Continued independence of healthcare regulators from the Government, employers and health professionals themselves, including the bodies that represent them, is also crucial says the GDC, responding to the draft legislation, which proposes a fully appointed, newly constituted Council.
To ensure its continued independence, the GDC has recommended that appointments to its Council are made by an independent body, to be specified by the GDC.
You can read the Council's full response to the consultation on the GDC website.
Notes
The consultation is available on the Department of Health website here.
The Health Care and Associated Professions (Miscellaneous Amendments) No 2 Order is the first in a series of Orders that will take forward the reforms identified in the Government's White Paper Trust, Assurance and Safety - The Regulations of Health Professionals in the 21st Century.
