Main Category: Mental HealthArticle Date: 27 Mar 2008 - 13:00 PDT
Dr Jimmy Devins, T.D., Minister for State at the Department of Health and Children with special responsibility for disability and mental health, today (Thursday, 27th March 2008) launched Console's National Snowdrop Day to raise funds to support their professional counselling, support and helpline services.
The Minister said "Providing hope to those who have been bereaved as a result of suicide is an invaluable gift. This is why for this campaign the decision to use the snowdrop - the first flower of spring and a symbol of hope - is so apt".
He added "Sadly, too many lives in this country are lost to suicide and in the midst of grief the range of information and supports available to those left behind is an important resource".
Console provides help and support to people bereaved through suicide and promotes positive mental health within the community in an effort to reduce the high number of attempted suicides and deaths through suicide.
The Minister said "we need to develop a culture that recognises the signs and signals of distress and is willing to help and one that focuses early in life on developing good coping skills and avoiding harmful practices".
The Minister commended the work of Console in providing encouragement and support to those who suffer the intense trauma of bereavement through the suicide of a loved one and wished them every success with this national Snowdrop Day.
