This year's National Infertility Day (NID) conference recognises 30 years of IVF by welcoming as our opening speaker Professor Robert Edwards, who alongside his late colleague Sir Patrick Steptoe was one of the pioneers of IVF. In addition we are delighted to also welcome Professor Andre Van Steirteghem, the pioneer of intra-cytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) which gave the chance of a child to those affected by male infertility.

The conference will take place on 19th July 2008 at The New Connaught Rooms in central London.

We have the most distinguished list of more than 30 other speakers delivering talks on subjects ranging from medical areas such as donor issues, male and female infertility and new developments including in vitro maturation and the issue of single embryo transfer. We will also cover related topics including nutrition, Chinese medicine, adoption, surrogacy and much more. There will also be a session looking at what to do if treatment fails.

The event will host a comprehensive exhibition where delegates can gather information from a wide variety of exhibitors, including Clinics, Patient Organisations, Pharmaceutical companies, Medical Supply Companies, Complementary Therapists and many more

One in six couples currently suffers from infertility and most people will know someone who is affected. National Infertility Day provides an opportunity for everyone to bring together infertility patient associations, health professionals and patients in what is the largest, most comprehensive conference in the infertility calendar. This event will help raise awareness and stimulate debate on many subjects related to the illness.

Clare Brown, Chief Executive of Infertility Network UK and Chair of the Organising Committee of National Infertility Day said: "This day will recognize how treatments which 30 years ago were seen as possibly going beyond the mark are now recognized treatments for infertility. It's a shame that the NHS in many areas still, after 30 years, do not seem to see them as such. We hope that this Day will show the opposite".

About Infertility Network UK (I N UK)

In the UK it is the largest network in the UK for those experiencing fertility problems, offering face to face and telephonic support and information at Regional and National level.

Members comprise mainly of couples undergoing infertility treatments, those who have faced infertility in the past, and continue to support I N UK. Those who have gone on to face a life without children receive support from our More to Life branch. Many professional organisations and individuals from within the infertility spectrum also support us.

Infertility affects a staggering one in six couples in the UK. The chances are that most people will know someone who has had, or is having fertility problems. Infertility is an illness that can often be successfully treated, but is one which brings with it, very real emotional distress and even today is widely underestimated in terms of it's effects on a couple. There is for some, still a stigma attached to this illness because of the very nature of it.
