The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC), the regulatory body for nurses and midwives, has announced the appointment of Ian Todd as the new Director of Fitness to Practise (FtP).

Ian said he was delighted with his new appointment and is looking forward to the task ahead. He said:
"I am very pleased to have been appointed as Director and I look forward to the challenge of continuing to deliver an efficient and high quality service. I hope my skills and experience will allow me to thrive within this new position."
Ian's key responsibilities will be to take charge of the overall performance of the Fitness to Practise Department and to monitor standards of performance.
Ian has a proven track record of successfully improving operational performance. He previously worked as the Assistant Director of Operations - Performance Improvement, Urgent Care & Clinical Development at the London Ambulance Service NHS Trust. He was responsible for ensuring that the Trust delivered on its long-term clinical and operational goals.
Ian has also worked as Director of Clinical Governance and Training at Two Shires Ambulance NHS Trust and as Assistant Director of Clinical Effectiveness at Warwickshire Ambulance Service NHS Trust. Ian added: "The overriding purpose of our Fitness to Practise activities is to protect the public from those nurses and midwives who may pose a risk to public safety. I will ensure that the public can continue to have faith in the service and the procedures it uses."
NMC Chief Executive, Sarah Thewlis, said: "I am delighted that Ian has decided to accept this position and I am sure that his experience and commitment within the health sector combined with his proven skills of delivering at the highest level will be of great benefit to the NMC."
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) is the UK regulator for two professions, nursing and midwifery. The primary purpose of the NMC is protection of the public. It does this through maintaining a register of all nurses, midwives and specialist community public health nurses eligible to practise within the UK and by setting standards for their education, training and conduct. Currently the number of registrants exceeds 674,000. The Nursing and Midwifery Order 2001 (The Order), sets out the NMC's role and responsibilities.
