The American Hospital Association (AHA) will present its highest honor, the Distinguished Service Award, to Fred Brown LFACHE, Chairman of Fred L. Brown & Associates, LLC an international consulting company in Scottsdale, Ariz. This award recognizes significant lifetime contributions and service to the nation's health care institutions and associations.

"With a deep commitment to meeting community and health care needs, Fred has excelled not only as an innovator in health care system integration but also as a leader in advancing health and quality," said AHA President Rich Umbdenstock. "This award honors Fred's leadership and commitment in the health care field."

Brown's health care career spans more than 40 years. Before beginning his consulting business in 2002, he was the founding president and CEO of BJC HealthCare in St. Louis where he fashioned an integrated health care system that focused on the full spectrum of care and community need. Under Brown's leadership BJC developed a comprehensive health care network featuring 14 acute care hospitals, 7 long-term care facilities, 200 care sites, 30,000 caregivers and physicians and health plans covering more than 200,000 patients. Brown put BJC in the national spotlight for his work in creating a health care delivery and financing system featuring a unique mix of community, rural and academic services.

Brown is a nationally recognized leader in the health care field. Following his term as the AHA's 1999 chairman, he led efforts to continually raise the bar in health care quality as a member of The Joint Commission Board of Commissioners for seven years, including two years as chair, and brought his health care acumen to leading the National Kidney Foundation as its chairman. He also has served as a visiting professor and executive-in-residence at The George Washington University in Washington, DC. He currently serves as Adjunct Professor of Health Services Management and Leadership at The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services and Regent for Arizona for Northwestern University.

He serves as a member of the boards of directors of several corporations, as well as many health care organizations. Other professional activities have included serving as past President of the Washington University Medical Center, a past Governor and Regent of the American College of Healthcare Executives, and past Chairman for the American Protestant Health Association, the Missouri Hospital Association, the Hospital Association of St. Louis and the Chancellor's Council of the University of Missouri-St. Louis.

A native of West Virginia, Brown holds a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in Chicago, a master's degree from The George Washington University in Washington, DC and an honorary doctorate of humane letters from the University of Missouri-St. Louis.
