What:

Since 1992, the U.S. Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (BCRP) has funded over $2 billion in innovative breast cancer research. The BCRP is sponsoring its fifth international Era of Hope Meeting, a unique forum for scientists, clinicians, breast cancer survivors and advocates, policy makers, and the public to come together and discuss the latest findings in breast cancer research and future directions to eradicate this disease.

The BCRP-funded studies often push the boundaries of breast cancer research and serve as an important complement to the traditional body of knowledge. The Era of Hope program will be attended by more than 1,600 awardees, researchers, breast cancer survivors and health advocates and will feature more than 1,200 abstracts and research presentations.

Why:

Research collaboration and discussion among scientists and advocates fosters innovative thinking and fresh ideas, while also identifying gaps in current research. Through the Era of Hope Meeting, the BCRP will inform the public of the current progress made in breast cancer research while also fostering collaborations that may increase the number of creative, cutting-edge ideas in breast cancer research potentially leading to new breakthroughs that will help scientists better understand, prevent, and treat the disease.

When/Where:

June 25-28, 2008
Baltimore Convention Center
Baltimore, MD

About the BCRP and Breast Cancer

Since its inception 16 years ago, the BCRP has distributed through over 5,000 research grants that fulfill unmet needs in breast cancer research. In 2008, the program received $138 million in Congressional Appropriations to be distributed to researchers. Recognizing that the war against breast cancer must be fought on multiple fronts, the BCRP has developed a multidisciplinary research portfolio that encompasses a wide spectrum of prevention, detection, diagnosis, and treatment research projects.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women, with one out of every eight women developing breast cancer in her lifetime. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2008 alone, approximately 240,510 women in the United States will receive a diagnosis breast cancer and 40,480 will die because of the disease.
