Recent reports have diabetes patients asking their doctors: "Is controlling my blood sugar level dangerous?" A panel of experts will consider the impact of glucose control through studies including ACCORD, ADVANCE, VADT, BARI-2D, Steno-2, ORIGIN, and NAVIGATOR and their meaning for the future of diabetes care. The symposium will take place between 3:00 and 4:45 PM on Friday, May 16, 2008, at the 17th Annual Meeting & Clinical Congress of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE), at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort in Orlando.

"There's a lot of information out there that's confusing for patients," AACE member and symposium chair Etie Moghissi, MD, FACP, FACE said. "As experts in diabetes care, it is the endocrinologists' job to make sure the patients have the facts."

The session will be divided into four sections, with an opportunity for the experts to answer audience questions. AACE member Dr. Faramarz Ismail-Beigi, an investigator in the ACCORD study and the Principal Investigator of the Ohio/Michigan Network of ACCORD, will discuss the implications of ACCORD, ADVANCE, VADT, and BARI-2D. AACE members George Grunberger, MD, FACE and Laurence Blonde, MD, FACE will discuss what has been learned from the STENO-2, ORIGIN, and NAVIGATOR trials.

"This symposium is an attempt to summarize what we hope to learn in the next few months from several on-going glycemia management trials focused on the prevention of cardiovascular disease," Dr. Ismail-Beigi said. "Discussing these studies will be beneficial for the medical community and the diabetes patients they treat."

This special symposium, "Clinical Trials Targeting Glycemia: What Do We Expect to Learn? ACCORD, ADVANCE, VADT & More" is part of the 17th Annual Meeting & Clinical Congress. Other sessions of interest at the meeting include, "Insulin Resistance and Atherosclerosis: The Missing Link," "Diabetes: A Cardiac Condition," and "Hypoglycemia: The Limiting Factor in the Glycemic Management of Diabetes."
