The Florence Nightingale Museum at St Thomas' Hospital, Lambeth, will open late and be free for visitors Friday 16, Saturday 17 and Sunday 18, from 6-8pm.

Discover how the famous nurse, hero of the Crimean War, and the "Lady with the Lamp" transformed the care of sick and wounded British soldiers during the terrible winter of 1855 (?).

Learn how Florence Nightingale fought to make nursing into a respectable profession, founding the world's first training school for nurses at St Thomas' Hospital.

Meet the remarkable Jamaican-born Mary Seacole, who like Nightingale, also went to the Crimea to help, travelling to the front lines and tending the sick under canon fire.

The special evening opening will celebrate today's nurses and carers during Nurses and Midwives Week, and as part of Museums and Galleries Month 2008.
