The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the nation's largest, independent medical student organization, hosted the 6th Annual MD/MBA Program Conference, April 11-13, 2008 in Reston, Virginia. The conference, sponsored by the Georgetown University School of Medicine and the University of Southern California (USC) Keck School of Medicine, brought together MD/MBA speakers, students and program directors across the country to discuss combined MD/MBA training and the career opportunities available to professionals dually trained in medicine and business.
"This conference was an incomparable opportunity for MD/MBA students and those interested in combined medical and business training. The speakers, MD/MBA program directors, and caliber of students made this weekend incredibly valuable," says Brian Hurley, AMSA national president-elect and graduating MD/MBA student from USC. "I'm proud that AMSA has become a home for MD/MBA students."
Topics addressed during the weekend conference included medical entrepreneurship, international health care consulting, a business case for single payer national health insurance and an analysis of available MD/MBA programs.
"The business of medicine is becoming increasingly important and physicians must be prepared, whether they enter hospital administration or handle the administrative responsibilities within their own practice," according to Maria Chandler, MD, MBA, president of the National Association of MD/MBA Programs and faculty advisory for the MD/MBA program at the University of California, Irvine. "MD/MBA programs seek to develop outstanding physician executives."
The 7th Annual MD/MBA Program Conference will be held at the Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio.
