As we age, there are many physical changes to be faced and endured. The debilitating effects of impaired vision caused by Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD) shouldn't be one of them.

Unfortunately, the progressive sight disorder, AMD is the leading cause of impaired vision in people aged over 65 - and, of course, a prime threat upon continuing independent living. The first tell tale signs of AMD are loss of fine vision and colour at the centre of the eye. Sharp vision in this part of the eye is essential for reading, driving, writing, watching television, recognising people and performing fine tasks around the home.

Research into the condition has shown that a regular nutritional supplement programme can significantly reduce the progression of AMD. The full facts are made available in a comprehensive article on the Care Directions' website. Go to: http://www.caredirections.co.uk

There is now a revolutionary new surgical treatment to improve vision in people with the 'dry' form of AMD. This is the subject of an informal public lecture to be held at St. Anthony's Hospital, North Cheam on Thursday, May 22nd.

The lecture by a Consultant Opthalmic Sureon will commence at 7pm, with doors opening at 6.30pm. The lecture will also cover Cataract Surgery. For complete details go to here.

Other lectures in a Summer series at St. Anthony's are as follows:

- Monday, June 9th HAND SURGERY
- Tuesday, July 15th LIVER DISEASE
