The Canadian Diabetes Association applauds the Government of Prince Edward Island's commitment to tackle diabetes in the province, as outlined in the 2008 Budget Speech.
"The Canadian Diabetes Association applauds the Government of PEI for keeping its commitment to those living with and affected by diabetes," said Jake Reid, Regional Director, Canadian Diabetes Association. "We're encouraged to see the Minister of Finance demonstrate an understanding of the benefits of investing in diabetes."
"By announcing a program that will cover the costs of test strips, the government is acknowledging the seriousness of diabetes and recognizing the need to invest nowin the health of people living diabetes," said Reid. "Government, healthcare professionals and communities need to work together to ensure people with diabetes in Prince Edward Island have access to and are receiving the best possible care and treatment."
According to the Canadian Diabetes Association's 2005 Diabetes Report, PEI has one of the highest rates of diabetes in Canada. In addition, Islanders currently pay some of the highest out-of-pocket expenses for their diabetes care.
"People with diabetes can't effectively manage their disease when they are forced to balance their health against living expenses such as paying rent or buying groceries," said Tracey Gallant, Volunteer Regional Chairperson and a mother of a child with diabetes. This announcement is a step in the right direction, and I am encouraged to hear the government is willing to work collaboratively with the Canadian Diabetes Association in order to assist people living with diabetes."
The Canadian Diabetes Association works in communities across the country to promote the health of Canadians and eliminate diabetes through our strong nationwide network of volunteers, employees, healthcare professionals, researchers, partners and supporters. In the struggle against this global epidemic, our expertise is recognized around the world. The Canadian Diabetes Association: setting the world standard.
