Canterbury Christ Church University Is Launching A New Masters Degree In Cardiology At Its Medway Campus, UK

The programme is designed for medical practitioners who wish to enhance their knowledge and skills in cardiology.

The one year full time programme will focus on: coronary artery disease, valvular heart disease and the great vessels; heart failure and the cardiomyopathies; arrhythmias and syncope; and the impact of life style and diet on the heart health. The MSc Cardiology will be led by a teaching team of academic experts and consultant cardiologists who have specialist knowledge and research interests in a wide range of subject areas relating to cardiology.

Programme Director, Professor Michael Henein, said: "The MSc Cardiology programme will encourage students to engage in critical thinking, evaluate current professional issues and embrace the rationale of national and international guidelines for managing various cardiac diseases."

Nature of the programme


The MSc Cardiology consists of six modules that will be studied over the first two terms. The modules are studied at Masters level and each modules carries 20 Masters level credit points. After completing the modules over a nine month period, students will be awarded the Postgraduate Diploma in Cardiology or will be expected to complete a three module dissertation (60 Masters level credits) to be awarded an MSc Cardiology.

Assessment

Assessment will include:


- Final examinations in the form of written short answer questions, which will be held at the end of semesters one and two (for the Postgraduate Diploma);
- A dissertation which has to be submitted by the end of September for internal and external marking (for MSc);
- Final results will be issued before Christmas;
- Graduation will be held early the following year.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be a qualified medical practitioner with a minimum of one year post qualification clinical experience.

The International Office at Canterbury Christ Church University will check all international applications in terms of:

a) Equivalence of qualifications (by using NARIC and UCAS, as necessary);
b) English Language Level (minimum requirement is 6.5)

A Criminal Records Bureau check and Occupational Health screening will be completed for all successful applicants prior to registration and/or any clinical visits.

Faculty of Health and Social Care at the University's Medway Campus

The Faculty of Health and Social Caret offers student at the University's Medway Campus an innovative range of study opportunities, together with flexible continuing professional development activities for health and social care staff.

The programmes offered are:

- MSc/Diploma Cardiology;
- BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography;
- BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy;
- Diploma of Higher Education: Adult Nursing;
- Diploma of Higher Education: Child Nursing;
- Diploma of Higher Education: Mental Health Nursing;
- Diploma of Higher Education: Operating Department Practice

Locally, the Faculty of Health and Social Care works in partnership with, and has a strong commitment to, a variety of organisations including: the Kent and Medway Strategic Health Authority and NHS Trusts, Kent Social Services and Medway Social Services, and the North East London Strategic Health Authority.

Canterbury Christ Church University's Medway Campus

The University's Medway Campus is situated at Chatham. The site was officially opened by the Archbishop of Canterbury on 25th October 2004, when it welcomed its first cohort of 390 students. In 2007, the Medway Campus is providing education for more than 1,000 students and is a firm fixture in Chatham.

The University's Medway Campus works with local public sector providers, education providers, local businesses and the community to provide comprehensive programmes in health, education and policing. It aims to create new opportunities for local people to access a range of higher education programmes, and local employers to enhance their employment opportunities and delivery of services.

The Medway Campus has been carefully fitted out with a mixture of teaching space, specialist facilities and staff accommodation. It features two lecture theatres, 12 seminar rooms, an open access learning centre with 40 computer stations, four computer labs, a coffee shop, boardroom and offices for around 50 staff.

In addition, the building boasts a full skills lab floor with an x-ray suite, occupational therapy activity of daily living suite (with specially adapted bathroom, bedroom and kitchen), occupational therapy workshops, two hospital wards, a paediatric and midwifery suite and an operating theatre. Students and staff also have access to a new Learning Resources Centre.
