AARP CEO William Novelli has extended his contract for one year but will resign from his position in January 2010, the Washington Post reports. The additional year will allow Novelli to "tee up AARP's positions on health care" and other issues for the next president and "will permit a smooth transition at the helm of the nation's largest lobby," according to the Post. As CEO of AARP since June 2001, Novelli assisted the Bush administration with the creation of the Medicare prescription drug benefit. He also oversaw the failed 2007 attempt to expand SCHIP, although "such setbacks are rare" for AARP, according to the Post. Novelli's successor has not been named (Birnbaum, Washington Post, 5/6).
