The first Fellowship of the Dental Practitioners Association (DPA) was awarded to Brian Lux at the annual President's Dinner held on 10th May at the Millennium Gloucester hotel in South Kensington. Brian Levy, President of the DPA, awarded the honour on behalf of the DPA Council, in gratitude for distinguished, loyal, conscientious and diligent service to the Association.

Brian Lux was one of the earliest members of the Association and a long-standing member of the General Dental Council. He served on the DPA Council for many years and is twice past-President of the Association. The Fellowship of the DPA was created in 2007 in order to recognise members who have made an outstanding contribution to the Association. Brian Lux is the first recipient.

Chairman of the DPA Joe Sullivan BDS said "We are honoured to have had the loan of Brian's skills as a Council member over the years and I can not think of a person more deserving of receiving the first Fellowship of the DPA".

President of the DPA Brian Levy BDS said "I was immensely pleased to present this award to Brian in recognition of his long-standing service to the Association".

Chief Executive Officer of the DPA, Derek Watson BDS said "Brian might have boxed at light welterweight, but he was certainly no lightweight in the dental arena. He championed the cause of the general practitioner, a job that at times made him very unpopular with authority. Recently he has been active in campaigning against the mass screening of patients of dentists found to be HIV positive which causes unnecessary distress and alarm and for which there is no evidence base.

"I am sad to see Brian retire from the Council. He can be proud of his achievements and this honour shows that the Association is proud he was a member. I will miss his boundless enthusiasm and wish him all the best in his writing career".

Brian qualified from Guy's Hospital in 1956 and did National Service in the RAF. He was the London Hospitals Light Welterweight Champion and still travels around the world following British boxing. He was a single-handed practitioner in Altrincham for the majority of his dental career. In 2006 he celebrated fifty years unbroken membership of the DPA.

He has completed sixteen marathons and still runs regularly for charity at the age of 75 [June 2008]. He is now a prize-winning children's author. His column 'The Lux Letter' ran in the GDP magazine for over fifteen years until 2006 and now appears in Dental Practice Magazine. He enjoys spending time at his home in Llandudno and sailing his small boat.
