Washington Post Publishes Women's Health-Related Articles
Main Category: Women's Health / GynecologyArticle Date: 15 May 2008 - 8:00 PDT
The Washington Post on Tuesday in its health section published two women's health-related articles. Summaries appear below.
- "A Place To Pump: Despite Law, Some Nursing Moms Still Find It Hard To Express Breastmilk at Work": The Post examined the challenges some Washington, D.C., employers are having in complying with a December 2007 district law that requires employers to provide female employees with a clean, private space outside a restroom to express breastmilk. The law allows women who feel their employers are not complying with the measure to file a complaint with the district's Office of Human Rights. According to the Post, many employers support the law but have said they need time to adjust their facilities to provide the space (Adams, Washington Post, 5/13).
- "Thinking Prevention: Elmer Huerta Teaches Latino Women To See the Doctor While They're Well": The Post profiled Huerta, director of Washington Hospital Center's Cancer Preventorium, which targets low-income Hispanic women in the district area. For a $120 fee, the preventorium provides physical exams, blood work, consultations and Pap tests for its female clients, many of whom lack health insurance. The program aims to prevent serious illnesses and to educate patients about how to prevent breast cancer and other diseases. Huerta also hosts radio and television programs on health promotion and disease prevention. In addition, he is serving as president of the American Cancer Society this year (Moreno, Washington Post, 5/13).
