A Clinical Biochemist called for more education about anabolic steroid drug abuse at a conference in Birmingham (UK). Speaking at the annual conference of the Association for Clinical Biochemistry, Dr Michael Wheeler spoke out about the unknown side effects of drug abuse in sport.

Already many media outlets are discussing androgen abuse in advance of this year's Olympic Games in Beijing and the London Olympics in 2012. Yet what isn't being discussed are the many unwanted side effects.

Anabolic steroid abuse appears to be rife amongst many professional sports, the amateur athletic population and even ordinary gym users of all ages. There is a lot of information available about the performanace enhancement such drugs may bring about, however very little information about the side effects associated with these steroids.

Dr Wheeler described side effects which include acne, gynaecomastia and testicular atrophy at the same time as calling for more education on anabolic steroid abuse for both the ordinary public and GPs.
