Lori Daiello, PharmD, BCPP, received the 2008 ASCP Senior Care Pharmacist Award from the American Society of Consultant Pharmacists (ASCP) at the Opening General Session during Geriatrics '08, ASCP's 30th Midyear Conference and Exhibition, held in Las Vegas, Nevada. The ASCP Senior Care Pharmacist Award is presented annually to recognize individuals who apply their knowledge of geriatric pharmacotherapy on a daily basis through the practice of senior care pharmacy, thereby significantly improving the quality of life of the senior population.
Daiello is an expert in the care of seniors with dementia. She has practiced in geriatrics since the 1980s, when she consulted to skilled nursing facilities. It was there that she began to develop her interest and expertise in geriatric psychopharmacology.
Currently, she is fulfilling a Postdoctoral Dementia Research Fellowship at Brown University Medical School and the Alzheimer's Disease and Memory Disorders Center at Rhode Island Hospital, the first pharmacist to be accepted to this fellowship. In addition, she still maintains her private practice in Orlando, focusing on seniors with dementia.
"Lori Daiello was one of the first pharmacists in the country to specialize in geriatric psychopharmacology consultations and has become a nationally recognized expert in this area," said ASCP President Lee Meyer, PharmD, CGP.
"She has had a long and distinguished career as a clinical pharmacist providing direct care to seniors in a variety of settings. Hundreds, if not thousands, of patients have benefited from her expertise and compassion."
Equally impressive is the multiplier effect she has had on all of the students and pharmacists who have crossed her path over the years. While her direct contributions to the profession in general and to senior care pharmacy in particular are outstanding, the indirect contributions by all of the pharmacists she has influenced over the years are innumerable.
Daiello has developed a network of colleagues including geriatric psychiatrists, geriatric nurse practitioners, and social workers with whom she works directly in her community-based practice.
A distinguished researcher, Daiello has made many significant contributions to the professional literature, and is a frequent presenter at national and regional meetings. She has received numerous awards as a teacher and a mentor.
Previously, she was Clinical Instructor at The Ohio State University for ten years, and Clinical Instructor at the University of Florida Working Professional PharmD Program. She serves on the ASCP Educational Advisory Committee, and served on the ASCP Board of Directors from 2001-2003.
The American Society of Consultant Pharmacists, the recognized expert in geriatric pharmacotherapy, is the international professional association that provides leadership, education, advocacy, and resources to advance the practice of consultant and senior care pharmacy. ASCP's 7,000 members manage and improve drug therapy and improve the quality of life of geriatric patients and other individuals residing in a variety of environments, including nursing facilities, subacute care and assisted living facilities, psychiatric hospitals, hospice programs, and in home and community-based care.
