The ESMO (European Society for Medical Oncology) Conference Lugano (ECLU) is an educational event aimed to disseminate the major recent advances in oncology in an innovative format designed to particularly cater to the interest of young oncologists.

Condensing the sum of oncology know-how presented at major worldwide congresses prior to ECLU, the Lugano Conference presents a great opportunity to benefit from a comprehensive review of the latest cutting-edge information in oncology presented by renowned professionals in the field.

The conference includes extensive opportunities for continuing medical education, professional development and clinical experience exchange.

- Highlights sessions: a compilation of the most interesting findings in the most common cancer types (lung, head and neck, prostate, genitourinary, brain, colorectal, breast) collected from this year's major oncology conferences worldwide and presented by top experts. A lively scenario, stimulated by leading questions from a young oncologist, will pave the way to questions from the floor.

- Controversy sessions and Meet the Professor sessions will feature compelling topics such as the study of biomarkers in drug development, genomic and proteomic issues, and the much debated theme of cancer stem cells.

- Educational sessions on new insights into molecular mechanisms and clinical implications of genetic discoveries, along with the importance of multidisciplinary management of cancer patients, will provide state-of-the-art information on various tumor types, such as hematological malignancies, GI and breast cancers. Particularly emotive sessions on exciting topics will include cancer and pregnancy and the HPV vaccines.

- Poster sessions will leave room to explore important research findings presented by young, and less young, oncologists that have identified ECLU as an important vehicle and platform for their studies to be presented, listened to, commented on and discussed by leading specialists.

-Young Oncologists Masterclasses: a unique opportunity for young oncologists to learn how to set up and run a translational research unit and how to successfully use modern communication tools for daily clinical practice. The masterclasses will be introduced by a leading expert, followed by the live testimonial experience of a young oncologist.

- Cancer survivorship: How far have we come? Young oncologists of today will be the oncology specialists of tomorrow, those who will have the task to follow up on cancer survivors to identify potential late toxicities, application of new drugs and the implementation of a system which allows careful monitoring. The 2008 ECLU keynote lecture will paint a picture of the important advances in cancer treatment that have lead to a significant increase in the number of cancer survivors, with implications for the future which cannot be ignored.

The proceedings of the conference will be published as a supplement in the Annals of Oncology.

Meeting venue

Palazzo dei Congressi Lugano, Piazza Indipendenza 4, 6901 Lugano, Switzerland.
