This retrospective case-control study reviewed the records of indigenous women whose infants were diagnosed with Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS) to obtain information that can assist in the identification of women who require alcohol interventions.

FAS has been identified as a major cause of impairment among indigenous children in Far North Queensland.

This study provides the potential to identify prospective heavily drinking women who risk FAS in their infants and offers specific interventions to reduce alcohol consumption in pregnancy.
