ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - The 2008 Society for Urodyanamics and Female Urology (SUFU) session on Saturday afternoon focused primarily on the neurogenic bladder. The program opened with an excellent overview of the pathophysiology and evaluation of the neurogenic bladder by Drs. Victor Nitti and Angelo Gousse, followed by a comprehensive discussion of management strategies for patients with spinal cord injuries and neuropathology involving the brain, including Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, and stroke.

The options of indwelling versus intermittent self catheterization with or without pharmacologic supplementation were explored in detailed fashion. Proper education of patients, ideal maintenance of catheters, and surveillance of patients for malignancies related to long-term indwelling catheters were amongst the topics reviewed.

Subsequent presentation of more definitive management including sphincterotomy, urethral stents, botulinum toxin injections, and urinary diversion and urinary tract reconstruction ensued. Excellent discussion of the advantages and disadvantages of each option and a review of the literature provided an in depth overview of the current status of the field.

The final session completed the well-rounded curriculum with a review of topics ranging from neuromodulation to stem cell research and tissue engineering. An update on pharmacologic alternatives for the treatment of the overactive bladder was presented by Dr. Christopher Smith. Indeed, consideration of enhancement of inhibitory pathways rather than concentrating only on blocking excitatory (cholinergic) pathways is ongoing. Finally, the revolutionary topics of stem cells and tissue engineering and their potential roles in the field of pelvic floor reconstruction were reviewed in two excellent lectures by Drs. Chester Koh and Bradley Kropp, respectively.

Presented at the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA) - May 17, 2008. Orange County Convention Center - Orlando, Florida, USA.
