High school students who are interested in exploring a career in sports medicine, or who would like to enhance their high school athletic training-room skills, can attend the High School Athletic Training Aide Workshop hosted by UPMC Sports Medicine from Tuesday, July 29 through Thursday, July 31 at the new, convenient location of The Ellis School, 6425 Fifth Ave., Shadyside.

This three-day workshop is designed for high school students to explore the basic skills and knowledge necessary for careers in sports medicine. The workshop will expose students to key areas of sports medicine through lectures and hands-on practice with athletic training techniques and procedures.

An extensive amount of lab time will focus on skills that students can use in their high school athletic training environments. Students will learn how to prepare for an athletic training program in college. They also will have the option to receive instruction in American Heart Association adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED).

"I highly encourage any athletic training aide or high school student interested in the sports medicine field to attend our workshop," said Jesse Townsend, A.T.C., coordinator of the High School Athletic Training Aide Workshop. "It's a tremendous learning experience," said Townsend, who was recently appointed manager of Athletic Training and Development for UPMC Sports Medicine.

The general registration fee for the workshop is $50, which includes course and lab materials, daily breakfast and lunch, and a T-shirt. The optional CPR and AED certifications cost an additional $10. Supervising certified athletic trainers are welcome to accompany the high school students at no charge. The registration deadline is June 23 and space is limited. For questions or to register, please call the UPMC Center for Sports Medicine at (412) 432-3770.
