The American Society of Breast Disease will convene its second annual School of Oncoplastic Surgery, December 5-7, 2008, at the Westin Stonebriar Hotel in Dallas, Texas, and Baylor-Frisco Hospital.

According to leading breast oncoplastic surgeon and course director, Gail Lebovic, MD, "this unique weekend program will provide breast surgeons with fundamental principles and techniques for state-of-the-art surgical management of breast disease through extensive hands-on experience, live model workshops, and case discussions."

Enrollment is limited due to the intense nature of the program. As Dr. Lebovic notes, "during our course, participants will learn how to achieve complete oncologic tumor resection with the best possible aesthetic outcome, gain hands-on experience with minimally invasive biopsy techniques, and engage in interactive assessment using live models. The program will focus on practical surgical techniques including pre-operative planning, skin markings and tissue resection. "

Because the American Society of Breast Disease is committed to advancing multidisciplinary team-based breast healthcare, the course will include sessions on mammography, MRI, and ultrasound; managing high risk patients; pathology and risk of recurrence; and delivering radiation therapy so that participating surgeons fully appreciate the interdisciplinary aspects of oncoplastic surgery.

Society president Julio A. Ibarra, MD, says that "the Society offers this special course to respond to the growing interest among breast surgeons in the field of oncoplastic surgery, which combines both the goals of successful cancer treatment and optimal aesthetic outcomes for women at this challenging point in their lives. And Dr. Lebovic is bringing together established experts in the field to serve as course faculty."

Dr. Lebovic, Director of Women's Services at the Cooper Clinic, Alison Estabrook, MD, Director, Breast Center, St. Luke's & Roosevelt Hospitals, New York, New York, and Michael J. Cross, MD, Breast Treatment Associates, Fayetteville, Arkansas, will serve as course directors for this highly interactive, interdisciplinary CME accredited program.
