ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - Crispen and colleagues examined growth pattern kinetics in their series of renal masses under surveillance. This report describes 161 lesions in 146 patients with a median follow up of 26 months (12 - 156 months). The tumors in the series had the following characteristics: median diameter 2.0 cm (0.4 to 12.0 cm), median volume 4.18cm3 (0.0033 - 903.74 cm3). 85% of the lesions were solid on imaging at presentation.

25% of tumors did not exhibit any growth while on the surveillance protocol. Interestingly, tumor size at presentation was not predictive for lack of growth (p>0.05). For tumors that did exhibit growth, the changes in tumor volume exhibited Gompertzian growth kinetics - smaller tumors grew faster than the larger ones.

Similar findings were reported on Sunday May 18th by the group from the National Cancer Institute in patients with von Hippel Lindau (VHL) disease.

Presented by Paul L Crispen, MD, Rosalia Viterbo, MD, David Y T Chen, MD, Richard E Greenberg, MD and Robert G Uzzo, MD, at the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA) - May 17 - 22, 2008. Orange County Convention Center - Orlando, Florida, USA.
