Did you know that there's a new infant formula that blocks transmission of HIV from mother to baby? …that a mother's Vitamin D status during pregnancy will affect her baby's future dental health? … that there's a new topical oral syrup that prevents early-childhood tooth decay?
These are but a few of the thousands of pieces of information which will be presented when the International Association for Dental Research (IADR) holds its 86th General Session & Exhibition, July 2-5, 2008, at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre in Toronto, ON, Canada. It will also be the 32nd Annual Meeting of the Canadian Association for Dental Research.
This year, nearly 3,600 scientific presentations will be made, divided among plenary/oral/poster sessions and symposia/ workshops. Estimates are that more than 5,000 dental scientists, educators, students, and practicing dentists from around the world will convene, representing the latest thinking in dental research.
In addition to the individual presentations, there will be Distinguished Speaker lectures, symposia, and workshops during the four-day meeting, dealing with special-interest symposium topics ranging from knowledge translation, to using motivational interviewing to change human health behavior, to designing dental programs for high-risk children.
Featured during Meeting Week will be the IADR/Unilever Hatton Awards Competition (41 competitors from 18 countries) for student investigators. The presentations, in poster format, will be judged by top-level scientists. Winners will receive cash prizes and plaques.
The Opening Ceremonies and Welcome Reception, from 4:00 to 6:30 pm on Wednesday, July 2, will provide an exciting kick-off for the week's activities. Many awards and fellowships, including the 2008 IADR Distinguished Scientist Awards, will be presented. Refreshments at the Welcome Reception are generously sponsored by Wrigley Oral Healthcare Programs.
The Distinguished Lecture Series will feature presentations by two prominent individuals:
-
"Can Ethics Be Both Local and Global? Current Challenges in Conducting International Health Research", Eric Meslin (Indiana University Center for Bioethics, Indianapolis, USA), Thursday, July 3, 8:00 a.m., Room 808, Convention Centre (This event is graciously sponsored by Quintessence Publishing.) [NB: This is the W.J. Gies Distinguished Speaker Lecture.]
- "The Unholy Trinity of Infectious Diseases: Role of the Pathogen, Host, and Microbiota", B. Brett Finlay (Biotechnology Laboratory, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada), Friday, July 4, 8:00 a.m., Room 808, Convention Centre For the third consecutive year, there will be a session of "Late-breaking News", featuring "hot" scientific breakthroughs (Saturday, July 5, 1:45 p.m., poster session, Hall D-E).
Returning for the sixth consecutive year are Keynote Speakers, who will be presenting "state-of-the-science" addresses in all of the Scientific Groups.
Returning to the IADR meeting is a Job Opportunity Bulletin Service (JOBS), available to all registrants, located in the IADR Registration Area. Bulletin boards will be available to job recruiters to post job vacancies. There will also be a New Member Orientation Reception (Wednesday, July 2, 1:15-2:00 p.m.), where new members can find out about becoming more involved in the IADR and its specialty Groups and Committees. This reception is generously supported by the Colgate-Palmolive Co.
