Strain-Induced Tissue Remodeling In Ex Vivo Bladder Organ Culture: Implications For Regenerative Medicine
Main Category: Urology / NephrologyArticle Date: 30 Jun 2008 - 1:00 PDT
ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - The moderated poster session covering neurogenic bladder included a broad range of interesting presentations, starting with Drs. Long and Chancellor's work that showed that the bladder wall responds to stretch stimuli with an up-regulation of the extracellular matrix, in particular elastin and collagen, and alteration of cell phenotype.
These findings, seen in ex vivo organ culture, suggest a potential for tissue engineering of functional bladder wall for bladder replacement therapies.
Presented by Rebecca A. Long, MD, et al., at the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA) - May 17 - 22, 2008. Orange County Convention Center - Orlando, Florida, USA.
