The Medical Defence Union has announced that a limited number of places are remaining for its upcoming communications skills workshops for doctors taking place at its head office in London.
Dr Peter Schutte, Head of Advisory Services commented, "Many of the complaints and claims seen by the MDU can be traced back to a breakdown in communication between doctor and patient. The MDU regularly provides advice to members on how to ensure clear communication with patients, particularly during the consent process. Our communications skills workshops will enable GPs and hospital doctors alike, to gain practical skills and become more comfortable with applying them during patient consultations."
The one-day, fully interactive workshop is run in association with Healthcare Performance Limited and led by qualified coach Dr Emma Sedgwick MBBS, BSc, MRCPsych, DCH, MBA. Dr Sedgwick will be joined by a doctor from the MDU medico-legal advisory team. The course is open to both members and non-members of the MDU, but delegate numbers are restricted to twelve to allow small group working and individual practice feedback.
Taking into account the latest GMC guidance, the content includes:
- examples and consequences of both good and poor communication
- practical models for doctor-patient communication
- rapport building
- medico-legal and risk management advice
Dates for the 2008 workshops are:
- Monday 22 September 2008
- Thursday 23 October 2008
- Friday 28 November 2008
Registration fees (£170 for MDU members and £220 for non-MDU members) include a follow-up coaching session with Healthcare Performance Limited, an attendance certificate (approved for 5 CPD credits by the Federation of Royal Colleges of Physicians of the UK), a DVD of the practice role-play, course materials and lunch and materials.
MDU Services Limited (MDUSL) is authorised and regulated by the Financial Services Authority in respect of insurance mediation activities only. MDUSL is an agent for The Medical Defence Union Limited (the MDU). The MDU is not an insurance company. The benefits of membership of the MDU are all discretionary and are subject to the Memorandum and Articles of Association.
