Health Panel Urges Caution With Fireworks - American Council On Science And Health

The American Council on Science and Health (ACSH) urges Americans to celebrate the Fourth of July safely -- especially when the celebration involves fireworks. New York City opthalmologist and ACSH scientific advisor Dr. Emil Chynn warns that some 10,000 people seek treatment each year for fireworks-related injuries -- and that children are particularly vulnerable.

In an essay on HealthFactsAndFears, Dr. Chynn notes that 43 percent of fireworks injuries affect children under 15 years of age, and 23 percent are seen in children under 5. Furthermore, 69 percent of fireworks injuries occur in the month around July fourth. He notes that fireworks-related injuries frequently involve the eyes -- and a third of those result in a permanently blind eye. Even sparklers, long thought to be relatively safe, can reach nearly 2,000 degrees at their burning tips -- not a plaything for young children.

Dr. Chynn suggests following these and additional guidelines -- adapted from those of the American Academy of Opthalmology for the safe use of fireworks:

- Adult supervision and protective eyewear are de rigeur.
- Have a bucket of water nearby.
- Never give a firecracker or sparkler to a child.
- Never use a bottle rocket.
- Do not light firecrackers bigger than your pinkie, don't light them indoors, and don't try to relight duds.

Remember that fireworks were originally invented for war and hold destructive potential -- respect that and have a safe and happy Fourth of July holiday!
