Nearly 1,300 health lawyers and participants from across the nation gathered at the San Francisco Marriott in downtown San Francisco June 29-July 2, 2008 for the American Health Lawyers Association's In-House Counsel Program and Annual Meeting events.

Delivering the keynote address on June 29 was Dr. Peter R. Orszag, Director of the Congressional Budget Office. Dr. Orszag's presentation highlighted how persistent healthcare cost growth will challenge both our government and clients in the years to come. The general session also featured a panel discussion of the presidential candidates' perspectives on healthcare reform. Speakers included James Roosevelt Jr., President and CEO of Tufts Health Plan, representing the Democrat's perspective, and Thomas P. Miller, Resident Fellow of the American Enterprise Institute, representing the campaign of Senator John McCain.

Another highlight of the General Session was the always popular "Year in Review," presented by Beth Schermer, Coopersmith Gordon Schermer & Brockelman PLC, and Jack Schroder, Alston & Bird.

Breakout sessions on 35 different topics covered a broad range of issues and provided attendees valuable resources needed to advise healthcare clients. The Association's fifteen Practice Groups also sponsored 12 luncheons throughout the meeting, with speakers and panels presenting on a wide variety of topics.

Also offered during this year's Annual Meeting were two special one-day sessions: Arbitration Training, on June 29, and the Peer Review Hearing Officer Training Program, held July 1.

A full summary of the In-House Counsel Program and Annual Meeting will appear in the September 2008 issue of Health Lawyers News magazine.

The 2009 In-House Counsel Program and Annual Meeting will be held June 29 - July 1, 2009 at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel in Washington, DC. Complete information for this program and other educational sessions is available online at http://www.healthlawyers.org/programs.

Diagnosing Vision Problems in Children

Children with vision problems are often misidentified as having learning disabilities, especially since the kids themselves may not be aware there's a problem with their sight. But parents should look for warning signs of vision trouble.
