ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - (Reported from the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association) Abstract 314 reported that urinary incontinence leads to decreased mental health and high psychosocial stress.

Botox was effective in the treatment of overactive bladder syndrome, but up to 4 treatments were needed. 2 of 12 pediatric patients developed immunity to to Botox and antibodies against botox was found in the system. This immunity blocked the effectiveness of Botox.

Nickel et.al., in abstract 180 showed that daily administration of alkalinized lidocaine was better than placebo in the treatment of chronic pelvic pain in women. Symptoms were improved at days 8 and 15 after treatment.

Finally, abstract 1413 demonstrated that myoblast injection at the site of the vesico-urethral anastomosis was effective in the treatment of male and female post-surgical incontinence. Pad use was significantly less after the myoblast injection and functional return of the external sphincter could be demonstrated.

Presented by Toby Chai, MD, at the Annual Meeting of the American Urological Association (AUA) - May 17 - 22, 2008. Orange County Convention Center - Orlando, Florida, USA.
