Prof. Peter Mulders from Nijmegen (NL) was recently appointed chairman of the executive board of the EAU Research Foundation (RF). The Clinical Studies Committee and the EAU Registries section are now headed by Profs. Anup Patel and Andrea Tubaro respectively.

The foundation“s mission statement is ambitious and self-confident: "The EAU RF should be self-funded, so we should be successful in obtaining the money required," chairman Peter Mulders pointed out. Package deals seem to be the corner stones of the new economic philosophy of the foundation.

For sponsors, getting access to a package of options including both the advantages of the EAU as a large membership organisation and event organiser and the offers of the Research Foundation is even more attractive. Basic research, clinical studies and education come together to create new opportunities. "Basic Research Career Programmes" will promote young gifted urologists as the new opinion leaders of tomorrow. These programmes will help them in establishing their careers as well as contribute to enhancing overall medical care by educating urologists in high quality research and clinical trials.

The "Urology trials" are another focal point of future planning. "At the moment," Mulders explains, "we are discussing several trials with companies with two or three phase III studies scheduled to start in 2009". An additional, non-pharmaceutical company sponsored study on superficial bladder cancer is also under preparation.

The Research Foundation will also be involved in assessing the quality of centres providing the best conditions for clinical fellowships.

European Association of Urology

The European Association of Urology comprises various constituent bodies, including the Executive Committee, Board and Offices. The administration of the EAU is conducted by an Executive Committee composed of active members who are elected by the General Assembly. Its decisions are carried out by the different Offices. The Executive Committee and Offices are assisted by the EAU Central Office which is run by the Executive Management.

EAU Membership is open to all professionals active in the field of urology including urological nurses. The EAU liaises closely with pan-European national urological organisations in order to optimise services to its members. Moreover, as part of its commitment to excellence in urological care, the EAU encourages urological research through its Foundation for Urological Research.
