Transurethral Ultrasound Guided Application Of Autologous Myo- And Fibroblasts In Treatment Of Incontinence In Women: 2 Year Data

ORLANDO, FL (UroToday.com) - The group from Innsbruck, Austria, who has considerable experience with transurethral injection of autologous myo- and fibroblasts, presented their two-year follow up data on 112 women with stress or mixed urinary incontinence who underwent the procedure.

Small skeletal muscle biopsies were harvested from the upper arm and grown in culture. Under ultrasound guidance, the fibroblasts were injected into the urethral submucosal layer for bulking effect while the myoblasts were injected into the rhabdosphincter to provide both bulking and contractility of the rhabdosphincter. Mean preoperative pad use was 5.99 and two years post-procedurally was 1.08. 62.5% did not use any pads, 28.4% used one pad per day, and 9.1% continued to have urinary incontinence requiring regular pad use.

The data suggest a minimally invasive, well-tolerated, efficacious treatment option for stress incontinence.
