Diabetes UK is delighted to announce its continued support of the National Prevention Research Initiative (NPRI), which funds research aimed at improving health and preventing conditions or diseases such as diabetes, cancer, obesity, stroke and dementia.

Sixteen government departments, research organisations and charities have backed the latest phase of the Medical Research Council's venture, which will make £12m available to UK researchers. The funds will help tackle complex questions, focussing on behaviours associated with significant health risks such as smoking, alcohol consumption, diet and exercise.

"Diabetes UK has contributed financially to the NRPI since its inception in 2004 and is delighted to continue to do so. The NPRI is hugely important because it is aimed at research in primary prevention," said Dr Iain Frame, Director of Research at Diabetes UK.

Funding high quality research

In May of this year, the NPRI announced details of the projects granted funding in its successful second phase, which was launched in March 2007. Almost £3m was awarded to 22 research projects, the majority of which will look at finding effective ways to encourage long-term changes in lifestyle among those at risk of developing chronic conditions, including diabetes.

"The impact of research funded in the first two phases will be felt across many chronic conditions, including diabetes," continued Dr Frame. "I look forward to working closely with the NPRI over the next five years to ensure that high quality research programmes continue to be funded."
