Diabetes UK is asking researchers to put forward proposals looking at 'novel interventions for the complications of diabetes.' This will form a crucial part of Diabetes UK's plan to invest a record £7.38m in 2008 to develop better treatments and prevention strategies, and ultimately to find a cure for diabetes.

In particular, we plan to fund studies looking at new ways to prevent, halt, or reverse the complications associated with diabetes. We hope to support 'first in human' trials, allowing treatments which have shown promise in laboratory tests to be trialled in humans for the first time.

Diabetes UK is looking for applications in the following areas:

- Retinopathy
- Neuropathy
- Nephropathy
- Complications related to the skin or feet
- Microvascular complications
- Macrovascular/ cardiovasuclar complications

Translating findings into benefits for those with diabetes

Through our research, we aim to help translate exciting findings made in scientific laboratories into benefits for people with diabetes as effectively and quickly as possible.

This call is based on the results of the Diabetes UK research priorities survey conducted last year, which was open to everyone and proved to be the biggest consultation we ever ran.
