Award-winning, orthopaedic surgeon, Russell Warren, MD, will join three other physicians as a 2008 American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) Hall of Fame inductee. The induction takes place July 13, 2008 at the AOSSM Annual Meeting in Orlando.

Since 1990, Dr. Warren has directed the soft tissue research laboratory at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. Discoveries from the laboratory's research have advanced progress toward better treatments that reduce pain and restore mobility for patients with soft tissue injuries of the shoulder and knee.

Dr. Warren, who has served as the team physician for the New York Giants since 1981 and received the Jerry "Hawk" Rhea Award for Outstanding NFL Team Physician in 2004, is no stranger to being honored with well-deserved awards. He has received AOSSM's O'Donoghue Award for Sports Medicine Research three times since 1982, along with the Humana Award for Clinical Research in 1992 and Mr. Sports Medicine in 2003. He has also received the prestigious Charles S. Neer Award from the American Shoulder and Elbow Society (ASES) in 1989, 1995, 2002, and 2003.

After receiving his medical degree from the State University of New York at Syracuse, Dr. Warren completed a one-year surgical residency at St. Luke's Hospital in New York and went on to serve as a Lt. Commander for the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War. In 1969, Dr. Warren received the U.S. Navy Medal of Commendation for his service.

In 1977, he began his teaching career in orthopaedics at Weill Medical College of Cornell University, where he is also currently a professor of surgery. He served as AOSSM Board President in 1995 and was President of ASES in 1994. He has published more than 300 papers on a variety of orthopaedic topics related to disease and injury of the shoulder and knee.

AOSSM established the Hall of Fame in 2001 to honor members of the orthopaedic sports medicine community who have contributed significantly to the specialty. Nominations are submitted by AOSSM members and reviewed by and selected by the Hall of Fame subcommittee.

The American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM) is a world leader in sports medicine education, research, communication and fellowship, and includes national and international orthopaedic sports medicine leaders. The Society works closely with many other sports medicine specialists, including athletic trainers, physical therapists, family physicians, and others to improve the identification, prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports injuries.
