Approximately 300 new HIV cases were reported in El Salvador following the country's National HIV Testing Day on June 27, Xinhuanet reports. HIV tests were available at no cost at Salvadoran Institute for Social Security clinics, and a total of 55,016 people were tested for the virus as part of the campaign. Among those who tested positive, 56% were men, according to the Ministry of Health. It added that a total of 949 HIV cases had been recorded up to June of this year in the country. El Salvador's first National HIV Testing Day was launched in June 2007, during which 54,619 people received HIV tests, 378 of whom tested positive for the virus (Xinhuanet, 7/9).
