The Foundation for Physical Therapy has announced that Ya-weng Tseng, PT, PhD, of Temple University, is the recipient of the 2008 New Investigator Fellowship Training Initiative (NIFTI) fellowship.
Tseng received the $78,000 award for her research project, "Utilizing Visual Feedback to Optimize Arm Reaching Adaptation." Her project is designed to increase the understanding of how to provide effective visual feedback when training people with brain deficits to learn a new movement pattern.
"Ya-weng has outlined a superb project in an outstanding mentored environment," said Foundation President/Chair Richard Shields, PT, PhD, FAPTA. "This fellowship will be one of her first steps toward what is certain to be a long and highly productive research career."
The purpose of the fellowship is to support doctorally prepared physical therapists in a mentored research experience as they begin their research careers. It is designed to accommodate both traditional post-doctoral as well as new faculty applicants and requires a commitment from the mentor as well as the institution at which the experience will take place. Tseng will be mentored by Amy Bastian, PT, PhD, associate professor of Neurology at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Bastian also is director of the Motion Analysis Lab at The Kennedy Krieger Institute. She has an outstanding history of providing successful research experiences to post-doctoral fellows with physical therapy backgrounds.
