Association Between Serum Prostate-Specific Antigen Level, Liver Function Tests And Lipid Profile In Healthy Men

UroToday.com - In the online version of the BJU International, a group of Korean investigators has reported on the impact of liver function and lipid parameters on PSA levels. The liver is involved in eliminating serum PSA, but the kidneys and lungs are not. Free PSA is eliminated by the kidneys, but due to its molecular size, PSA bound to larger proteins is cleared through the liver. Furthermore, the lipid profile can affect serum PSA levels through the metabolism of serum testosterone.

This study assessed the relationship between PSA, age, and LFT to include alkaline phosphatase (ALP), total bilirubin (TB), lipid profile (total cholesterol, TC, TG and HDL) and fasting blood sugar (FBS). Between 2002 and 2006, 38,844 healthy male employees of the Korea Electric Power Corporation ages 20-65 who visited the Health Promotion Center for a routine check were included. The study cohort included 38,157 of these men with serum PSA levels <4ng/ml and normal creatinine levels. complete physical exams were performed and body mass index was calculated.

Mean participant age was 44.37 years and the mean PSA level was 0.89ng/ml. In the multivariate regression analysis, the 4 percentiles of serum PSA level showed trends that greater age was associated with serum PSA levels, and BMI, ALT, HDL and FBS were negatively correlated with serum PSA levels. However, serum PSA levels were more likely to be affected by interrelationships between serum testosterone levels and the lipid profiles related to the metabolic syndrome, rather than an ability of the liver to metabolize serum PSA.
