The antiabortion group Operation Rescue/Operation Save America is holding its national convention this week in Atlanta and protesting at several local churches, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. The group also plans to protest at several clinics that perform abortions around the city this week, according to its Web site.
According to the Journal-Constitution, the churches targeted by Operation Rescue were chosen "for offending the group's beliefs on abortions and homosexuality." Operation Rescue's Web site says, "Because judgment begins in the church, repentance must begin there also." First Baptist of Sugar Hill was one of the churches targeted by Operation Rescue because of a sermon Pastor Richard Lee made in March, during which he apologized for any hurt he caused by having participated in antiabortion demonstrations. "I'm not passing judgment," Lee said, "I've never met a woman who was proud of having an abortion. Why cast further pain on her? Why not love her and help her make better choices in the future?" He added that Operation Rescue "illustrates the very reason I apologized. It's that type of group that prevents people from coming to the Lord" (McCarthy, Atlanta Journal-Constitution, 7/15).
