The Museum of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB) is inviting people to get a dose of history with its new Behind the Scenes initiative. These brand new sessions have been designed to encourage people from the local community to get up close to the Museum's collection. Ten sessions will be hosted from August through to December, with the Museum exploring a new theme each month.

The following sessions will take place:

-- Lambeth's Links with Pharmacy, 6 August, 2-3pm & 21 August, 6-7pm
-- Making Medicines, 3 September, 2-3pm & 18 September, 6-7pm
-- Medicine Chest, 1 October, 2-3pm & 16 October, 6-7pm
-- Old Photographs, 5 November, 2-3pm & 20 November, 6-7pm
-- Christmas Cold Cures, 3 December, 2-3pm & 18 December, 6-7pm

Briony Hudson, RPSGB Keeper of the Museum Collections, said:

"Each session will give people the chance to work closely with our museum professionals and find out all they ever wanted to know about different aspects of the history of pharmacy. The sessions include unique opportunities to handle some of our interesting objects and get closer to our collections than ever before. We'd really like to see people from the local community coming along to learn more about the Museum - spaces are limited though, so please book soon!"

The initiative forms part of an 18-month Audience Development Programme, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund*. To find out more about the Behind the Scenes sessions, or to book your place, please contact the RPSGB's Museum on 0207 572 2210 or email museum@rpsgb.org.

Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain (RPSGB)

The RPSGB is the professional and regulatory body for pharmacists in England, Scotland and Wales. It also regulates pharmacy technicians on a voluntary basis, which is expected to become statutory under anticipated legislation. The primary objectives of the RPSGB are to lead, regulate, develop and represent the profession of pharmacy. The RPSGB leads and supports the development of the profession within the context of the public benefit. This includes the advancement of science, practice, education and knowledge in pharmacy. In addition, it promotes the profession's policies and views to a range of external stakeholders in a number of different forums.

Following the publication in 2007 of the Government White Paper Trust, Assurance and Safety - The Regulation of Health Professionals in the 21st Century, the RPSGB is working towards the demerger of its regulatory and professional roles. This will see the establishment of a new General Pharmaceutical Council and a new professional body for pharmacy in 2010. * In November 2007 The Museum of the RPSGB was awarded £49,300 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to create an Audience Development Programme. The 18-month project aims to encourage people to explore, enjoy and learn about the Museum's collections through a range of educational and outreach activities. The project targets three key audiences: pharmacy students and lecturers; primary and secondary school students, and London-based adults.
