Statistics out today from the leading food intolerance expert, YorkTest, show that nine out of the ten of the UK's most intolerable foods are commonly found on our breakfast table - proving it really is the most important meal of the day. If you wondered why you were going to work on a headache, to school with a stomach ache or to a lecture with lethargy, a breakfast of toast, egg or cereal could be the reason why. A list of the UK's top ten most 'intolerable' foods is based on the results of over 10,000 people who took a YorkTest FoodScan 113 over the last 12 months and the top ten culprits are:
1. Cows Milk: 64 per cent intolerant
2. Yeast: 58 per cent intolerant
3. Egg White: 53 per cent intolerant
4. Wheat: 34 per cent intolerant
5. Egg yolk: 32 per cent intolerant
6. Gluten: 26 per cent intolerant
7. Cashew Nuts: 22 per cent intolerant
8. Brazil Nuts: 17 per cent intolerant
9. Lentils: 13 per cent intolerant
10. Almond: 13 per cent intolerant
For those prone to food intolerance, fruit is the best for breakfast. However, it is wise to test your food intolerance before embarking on a 'fruit fest' as surprisingly, more than one in ten people are intolerant to Kiwi and almost one in twenty-five intolerant to Cranberry.
Friendly fruits according to the food intolerant list are:
- Lemon - 0.6 per cent intolerant
- Banana - 0.5 per cent intolerant
- Grapefruit - 0.5 per cent intolerant
- Raspberry - 0.3 per cent intolerant
- Apple - 0.3 per cent intolerant
- Pear - 0.24 per cent intolerant
- Apricot - 0.3 per cent intolerant
- Mint Mix - 0.1 per cent intolerant
Nutrition expert Sheila Boyde says: "Breakfast is such an important part of the day and it is crucial we start with the right foods for us. As part of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle we must understand the effects some foods can have as many of us suffer needlessly with uncomfortable symptoms. This list shows that it's not always the unhealthiest foods that can cause us problems and it's always best to be tested to ensure you are making the right diet choices. In my opinion, a Smoothie using fruits with rice milk, goat's milk or yoghurt or a grapefruit would be a great way to start the day."
Commenting on food intolerance, Tom Hardman, M.D. of YorkTest said: "If you suffer from food intolerance, some of the foods you consume, particularly in the morning, could really be affecting your lifestyle. Symptoms such as irritable bowels, migraines, asthma and fatigue are synonymous with other conditions; they are often wrongly diagnosed and remain a real burden. YorkTest.com offers FoodScan 113, a clinical testing service provided directly to consumers. It identifies problem foods and provides a solution that could change your life."

About YorkTest.com FoodScan
YorkTest Laboratories are the UK's leading specialists in food intolerance testing, and providers of the FoodScan 113 Food Intolerance Test. Since 1982, this cutting-edge scientific laboratory has worked with internationally recognised scientists, universities and charities to help more than 250,000 food intolerance sufferers to get better. More than any other food intolerance test, the YorkTest.com FoodScan 113 has been evaluated in hospital clinical trials.
YorkTest meets the essential requirements of the European In Vitro Diagnostic Medical Devices Directive implemented into UK legislation by the Medical Devices Regulations 2002, a piece of legislation that came into force on 13 June 2002.
The FoodScan Blood Collection Kit is sent direct to the consumer, who uses the kit's sterile lancet to collect their own blood with a finger prick sample. The sample is collected onto an absorbent 'wand', placed into the supplied vial and packaging, and posted back to the laboratory to be tested for raised IgG antibodies.
The presence of food-specific IgG antibodies in a FoodScan test indicates that the person has had a reaction to that particular food and that the person may benefit by eliminating that food from their diet.
FoodScan results are sent directly back to the consumer (and their medical practitioner, if involved), with classification scores for each food type. A very important aspect of the service is the role of a nutritionist. With the FoodScan 113 food intolerance test two thirty minutes consultations give customer the advice and support they need to implement the changes in diet.
