The Prostate Cancer Charity comments on reports that The Duke of Edinburgh has been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

John Neate, Chief Executive of The Prostate Cancer Charity, said: "It is obviously a potentially difficult time when any diagnosis of prostate cancer is made. If indeed, as reports suggest, The Duke of Edinburgh has been diagnosed with prostate cancer, on behalf of The Prostate Cancer Charity, I would like to wish him and his family the best through what may be an uncertain time.

"Every year in the UK more than 7,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in their 80's. Unlike many other cancers, prostate cancer is different in that, in some cases it will not cause any problems in a man's lifetime. Prostate cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in men in the UK and all men need to increase their awareness of the disease.

"There are a number of ways to treat prostate cancer dependent on the stage in development it has reached. It is essential that all men with prostate cancer have access to high quality information and to a specialist nurse who can help them navigate the often complex choices about treatment options and support them through their chosen treatment route."

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in men in the UK. Every year in the UK 35,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer. One man dies every hour of prostate cancer in the UK.

African Caribbean men are three times more likely to develop prostate cancer than white men.
