The American Diabetes Association (ADA), the nation's leading non -profit health organization providing diabetes research, has collaborated with Healia Communities, a free online health community that enables people to get personal support for their health decisions from peers and experienced health professionals. The new collaboration, gives the ADA's diabetes advocates and health professionals an exclusive opportunity to communicate directly with members of Healia's online health communities related to diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, about 24 million or 8 percent of Americans had diabetes in 2007.

"This collaboration with the ADA is an example of how Healia is working with trusted nonprofit organizations to help people find relevant information and support in order to make important health decisions," said Tom Eng, Healia president and founder. "We hope that people with diabetes, or those taking care of someone with diabetes, will find the diabetes communities on Healia to be essential resources for information and support."

Through Healia Communities, people with health concerns can access peer support and obtain answers to health questions from an experienced panel of health professionals in a timely manner - typically within 48 hours. Healia Communities' health experts are physicians, nurses, and other health professionals from a variety of disciplines and specialty areas, including diabetes.

"We're excited about this opportunity to reach out and help even more people affected by diabetes through our relationship with Healia Communities," said Helen Mitternight, vice president of communications and external relations for the American Diabetes Association. "It allows the American Diabetes Association to give people personalized answers to their questions about diabetes, and really dovetails with our mission to improve the lives of all those affected by diabetes."
