For the second consecutive year, Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center and its senior management team have been named one of the 100 Top Hospitals® Performance Improvement Leader by Thomson Healthcare in the annual Thomson Performance Improvement Leaders study. The study examines the performance of more than 2,800 U.S. hospitals in a variety of clinical, financial and operational areas.
Caritas St. Elizabeth's was rated on eight factors that reflect clinical outcomes and efficiency, such as patient mortality, medical complications, patient safety, length of stay, expenses, profitability, cash-to-debt ratio and use of evidence-based medicine. Caritas St. Elizabeth's is one of 100 hospitals that improved the most from 2002 to 2006.
"Being named to this esteemed list two years in a row underscores the vast efforts on behalf of our medical staff to provide exceptional care to our patients," said Chris O'Connor, president of Caritas St. Elizabeth's Medical Center. "We are fully devoted to our mission of providing world-class care to our patients in the communities where they live, and being recognized as a 100 Top Performance Leader is a great honor."
The Thomson 100 Top Performance Leaders study analyzed publicly available Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review data and Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) outpatient data.
"This study identifies superior leadership, based on the success of hospital executive teams' long-term strategies for strengthening performance," said Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top Hospitals programs at Thomson Reuters. "These are true 'Good to Great' leadership teams that have focused on better serving their patients and communities."
