In modern cattle a north-south gradient of genetic diversity can be observed in various genetic systems, including the Y chromosome.
But when ancient Bronze Age, medieval and 18th century cattle were analysed for a variation in the Y-chromosome no such geographical gradient was found.
Instead we noticed extensive amounts of temporal variation that can be attributed to transportation of cattle early on in history and late breed formation.
