The recent Shipman Report (UK) has highlighted the importance of putting in place a system for tighter drug controls in the UK. However, an application exists already that could prevent another Shipman tragedy.

The Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) in the US is currently implementing a system that will allow for the secure electronic transmission of controlled substance orders. The Controlled Substance Order System (CSOS) is aimed at helping pharmacies, distributors and pharmaceutical suppliers securely automate the purchase and supply of controlled substances.

Cyclone Commerce has developed a CSOS solution that helps suppliers validate each buyer, and fulfill and manage CSOS orders more efficiently, which may reduce the average cost of processing orders by up to an estimated 85% saving. It also generates an audit trail of data movement and handles electronic reporting to the DEA.

Cyclone Commerce already runs the EudraVigilence gateway for EMEA, the European Agency for the Evaluation of Medicinal Products which is the first regulatory authority to require electronic submission of all pharmocovigilence data. Their products ensure that information throughout the healthcare ecosystem is transmitted securely and efficiently, and that collaborations are well managed - whether it's ICSRs, lab results, orders for medical equipment and prescriptions, or HL7 insurance claims and payments.

Cyclone can help accelerate the process of implementing a trusted system that safeguards the legitimate use of controlled drugs for patient care, thereby safeguarding the public from their misuse.
