The American Medical Student Association (AMSA), the nation's oldest and largest, independent association for physicians-in-training, announces the commencement of AMSA Academy, a training ground for physician leaders.
Established by students, for students, AMSA Academy takes medical students through the core competencies of leadership and project implementation, while building on key principles of important topics in medicine. There are currently 22 programs offered. Courses include: Community and Public Health Institute, Complementary and Alternative Medicine Leadership Institute, Circle of Healers National Retreat, Humanistic Elective in alternative medicine, Activism and Reflective Transformation Elective, SeaCouver Study Tour, the LGBT Medical School Chapter Leaders Summit, and many more.
"AMSA Academy strives to empower medical students to effect change in medicine," says Dr. Brian Hurley, AMSA's national president. "As the world of medicine changes everyday, the next generation of physicians will need different skills than their predecessors. The modern healthcare system needs physicians with a broader understanding of their patients, the ability to draw on multiple disciplines outside of medical science and the ability to effect change in an imperfect healthcare delivery system."
AMSA Academy programs are open to premedical and medical students. Specific applicant criteria are set by individual programs. Applications are reviewed for demonstrated interest and leadership potential.
