Recent advances in cervical cancer prevention offer new hope for controlling the disease in developing countries, where 80% of cases occur.

In a new series of papers launched Thursday by the journal Vaccine at the World Cancer Congress, leading researchers will set out the best independent, global thinking on the issue, provide new research on the cost effectiveness of HPV vaccines in two of the hardest hit regions of the world - Latin America and the Asia-Pacific region - and offer new insights into the most promising strategies for tackling the disease in low-resource settings.

What: Reporters are invited to attend a media briefing held jointly by Elsevier, the publisher of the research monograph, and the International Union Against Cancer, host of the World Cancer Congress. Key findings of the monograph will be outlined and experts will discuss why the new era of cervical cancer prevention presents an opportunity to bring the disease under control in poor countries for the first time. Advocates will brief reporters on how efforts are being stepped up to accelerate progress.

When: 10:30 a.m. CET, Thursday, 28 August 2008

Please note that for media unable to attend the media conference in Geneva, a live webinar will be broadcast at 15:00 CET on Thursday 28 August 2008. The webinar will last for 75 minutes which includes a minimum of 15 minutes for questions. It will be available for download following the webinar. Those interested can register here.

Where: Media briefing room, Geneva Palexpo Convention Centre. The room is located near the exhibition hall on the 1st floor.

Who:

- Dr F Xavier Bosch, Chief of the Cancer Epidemiology Research Programme (CERP) and Chief of International Affairs at the Catalan Institute of Oncology. Professor Bosch is the coordinator of the monograph

- Daisy Mafubelu, Assistant Director-General - Family and Community Health, World Health Organization

- Dr Harald zur Hausen, Professor Emeritus of the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg, Germany and discoverer of human papilloma virus (HPV) as the cause of cervical cancer

- Isabel Mortara, executive director of the International Union Against Cancer
