American Diabetes Wholesale, a discount provider of diabetic supplies to individuals without insurance, announced their 2nd annual Diabetes Educator of the Year Award contest recently at the American Association of Diabetes Educators 2008 International Diabetes Educators Conference in Washington, D.C. ADW created their award program in an effort to recognize the unsung heroes of the diabetes epidemic and offer promotion and recognition of dedicated healthcare professionals who remain committed to helping those living with diabetes.

"Diabetes Educators are on the frontline of the diabetes epidemic," says Chris Maguire, Vice President and Co-Founder of American Diabetes Wholesale. "Our award program is a way for American Diabetes Wholesale to say thank-you and bring attention to the selfless work these individuals are performing everyday."

All diabetes care professionals are eligible to win the contest, including Certified Diabetes Educators, nurses, physicians and other healthcare professionals who are committed to helping their patients learn how to effectively manage their diabetes. To nominate a healthcare professional, please visit http://www.americandiabeteswholesale.com/Contest. Click on "Nominate Your Favorite Diabetes Educator" and tell ADW's expert panel of judges in 250 words or less why the nominee should be the 2008 Diabetes Educator of the Year.

The winner of the contest will receive a 2-night/3-day stay at the Boca Raton Resort and Club in Boca Raton, Florida, round-trip airfare for themselves and a guest as well as ground transfers between the airport and the hotel. The winner will also be honored at a special ceremony coordinated by ADW and local diabetes advocate partners. CDEs, patients, co-workers, medical personnel and anyone else familiar with a Diabetic Educator's accomplishments may submit an essay. Submissions are due no later than Friday, November 7, 2008.

Last year, ADW honored Barbara J. Odom RN, PHN, M.ED, as the recipient of the 2007 Diabetes Educator of the Year Award. In addition to being a U.S. Navy Veteran and a Registered Nurse of 36 years, Barbara became a Certified Diabetes Educator in 1985. She has since worked independently and volunteered her time in the San Diego Community and throughout the country motivated by her love of nursing, teaching and helping others. She facilitates a monthly support group in Southeast San Diego, does workshop presentations on diabetes and other health-related topics.
